Dear PGSS Alumni and Parents:

It is with great pleasure that I write to express my sincere appreciation for all that you have done to restore
the Pennsylvania Governor’s School for the Sciences (PGSS) program at Carnegie Mellon University.

Since 1982, students from across Pennsylvania have benefited from the opportunities that PGSS has
afforded them, such as studying advanced science topics with university faculty, working collaboratively
with their peers across the Commonwealth, conducting original research, and presenting their work in a
scientific symposium.

I am grateful to PGSS Campaign Inc. for its leadership in partnering with Governor Corbett and restoring
PGSS in 2013 by raising half of PGSS’ operating budget in order to continue its mission into the future.
I recognize that the PGSS program provides students with a life-changing educational enrichment
experience, creates new opportunities for their future, and promises to strengthen science education in
Pennsylvania through the leadership alumni exhibit when they return to their high school.

For these reasons, I encourage you to support the PGSS Campaign during upcoming fundraising efforts.
Your dedication to the PGSS program is a true testament to the personal impact the program has had on
your life.

The Pennsylvania Department of Education is proud to partner with PGSS Campaign Inc. to continue the
mission of PGSS and maintain the program for Pennsylvania students in 2014 and beyond.

I am grateful for your commitment to help us ensure that the opportunities you enjoyed will continue to
be offered to many more deserving, talented Pennsylvania students.

Sincerely,

Carolyn C. Dumaresq, Ed.D.
Acting Secretary of Education
